A Second Chance to Walk and Love Again
Ballu is a Maremma Sheepdog mix, whose journey began as a farm working dog before a tragic accident changed everything. This resilient puppy (now full grown) came to our care after suffering serious injuries when he was accidentally struck by a vehicle, resulting in a broken rib, fractured pelvis, and fractures in both back legs.
Thanks to emergency surgery and dedicated medical care, Ballu walked, and even ran again. But his road to recovery took many more months.
What's remarkable about Ballu is his adaptability. While his activity was strictly controlled during this crucial healing period, meaning no running, jumping, or rough play, he discovered the quieter joys of life. Ballu became a champion cuddler and learned to channel his puppy energy into gentle activities like calmly chewing his favourite stuffed toys when feeling mouthy, working through nose work challenges, and solving food puzzles to keep his bright mind engaged.
Ballu needed a very special adopter who understood the importance of continuing his rehabilitation to ensure proper healing. This meant being vigilant about preventing him from overexerting himself, even when his puppy instincts told him to play harder.
Ballu's perfect match came along - a family fell in love and saw the opportunity to be part of his healing journey and watch him grow into the healthy, happy dog he's meant to be. It was also healing for the family who adopted him. It’s the story we want all dogs to enjoy as a second chance.
